Natural Hair + Wig = Protective Styling

I have been wearing my natural hair since April 2015. I decided to make a wig after watching a YouTube video to vary my look. I used my own brand Wuchi hair, Brazilian weave, lengths, 12, 14, 16 inch and a 12 inch closure. I bought the manriquene head on Amazon for £5, wig cap, thread, curved needle and some T pins,  to keep the wig cap steady while I sewed the weave in.
It took me a while and called it my mini project because it is my first time making a wig and I think I did a pretty good job.

The essence of this post, is to ensure you  that you can still have, grow and maintain your natural hair without applying relaxer and still vary your look with protective styling wearing a wig.

I am now growing my natural hair using my own brand hair oil and butters and I see the difference in hair lustre, thickness and shine. Most importantly my edges are growing back. I used to relax my edges in order for my weaves to blend in and look all natural, however, the relaxers started taking a toll by thinning the edges. Now my hair is growing back and you can do same for your hair and have thick healthy hair.

Get Ready for Winter

Just because summer is over does not  mean you can't look after your skin to maintain the softness and glow you worked hard to achieve during the summer months.

Just because from now on,you will start hiding the skin covered in black tights, trousers and thick layers does not mean you should neglect your skin care routine until , come spring when you join the bandwagon to start afresh.

You can still achieve flawless, soft supple skin underneath your winter wools simply by;
1. Using a good body scrub
2. Moisturise generously and
3. Use a nourishing body oil

Don't forget to keep hydrated even in the winter months.

What are your plans on how to keep the skin looking good even in the winter month?

Obogine Totalicious

Am sure you will be wandering what a food picture is doing on my skincare blog, well, I want to share this lovely photo I took of  luch we made over the weekend.
Although, I actually I did not cook this one from start to finish, I helped out with the preparation.  It was hubby who did and I was happy to snap away and eventually tuck in with delight. The reason I brought this to your attention, is to share my philosophy of what you eat is also as imprtant as what you put on your skin. I don't use receipe books to cook but I enjoy buying and collecting them. Not alot though, because most Africans I know don't use receipe books to cook, including myself. But that is all changing now. Some books I collect because of the amazing pictures of the food and how it is presented. Remember, we see food through our eyes, then we smell the aroma and eventually eat by tasting.  Hence, I share a picture of this lovely lunch we made..  Let me know if you try it out sometime. Enjoy.

How to prepare:

1. Buy some lovely obogine, we used 3, cut in half and Scoop out the inside to make enough space to scoop in a filling but not to thin not to have enough to eat when it is ready.

2. Season your filling, we used minced meat. But firstly cut out some sweet red peppers, orange peppers, garlic, ginger and onions. Now chop the vegetables up.
Heat your pan and pour in a bit of olive oil or sunflower oil and wok the minced meat for about 5mins. Enough time to make sure that the minced meat and peppers and herbs are all marinated and almost cooked. I use a lot of hebs when cooking and this one has, cinnamon, chives, parrika, and hot pepper and sprinkle of salt to taste.

3. Then scoop the mixture into your oborgine and fill well.

4. Pop it in to the oven to bake for about 20 minutes. Infact after 10 minutes in the oven you will begin to small the aroma of the spice and it is absolutely beautiful.

5. Check that the oborgine is properly baked, you will notice a slight brownish colour and the juice from the oborgine- then it is ready to eat.

6 Here is a picture of the final stage - we topped it up with some fresh tomatoes-  it is delicious with a nice glass of wine. Bona petit.

P.S- I wasn't sure what name to give it though!

What do you think?

Dealing With Eczema & Dry Itchy Skin

Eczema is a rash-like skin conditions that affects the skin. Also known as atopic dermatitis a skin condition that affects the skin. There are different types of eczema but I would list the most common; wet weeping eczema, dry itchy skin eczema, blistering skin eczema and the most common being atopic dermatitis. Eczema is not contagious it is  treatable but not totally curable. When dealing with eczema prone skin, sometimes many people find out that as soon as they stop using the prescribed product their skin flares up.However, all hope is not lost, If treated properly it could disappears or grown out of. But there is always a solution to help relive the problem. You are better of using natural products with gentle ingredients instead of harsh chemical based products or steroids that will dry out or thin out the skin and make it worse.

Anyone can develop eczema even in their later age.  If you are not sure why or what the cause is, there are a list of possibilities and causes. However, personally, you need to pin point what triggers or flares up your eczema, that way you are in a better position to mange whatever triggers it bearing in mind that people lead different life styles.Eczema triggers could be as a result of food allergies, sensitivity to dairy products, sensitivity to detergents in daily products or additives. It is also important to bear in mind that, people with eczema often develop sensitive skin and should be treated gently. Even using perfumed (synthetic ) skincare products can aggravate the skin due to the harsh chemicals that are not gentle on the skin. So be very careful when choosing products, don't choose them because they smell nice.Only make sure you know the ingredients that's been used in making them and that they are natural and gentle.

In the United kingdom, more and more people both old and young are suffering from Eczema. According to statistics, An estimated 1.7 million people in the UK have eczema, and the numbers appear to be rising.Chronic itching can severely reduce their quality of life. 15 million people have some form of eczema. This tells me that this is still a misunderstood condition that people are fighting to understand. Because eczema affects people in different forms.

Brush with Eczema
A few years ago, when I first found out that the rashes on my daughters skin was eczema I was devastated. From then on, I suddenly began to notice people and children with eczema, where ever I went I saw a bit of scratching and itching here and there. At that point I promised my self that I would do everything to help find a solution to the problem. With this article, I hope to share a few tips and solutions that can help you manage and deal with eczema prone skin using natural remedies and methods. As you know, he skin is the largest organ of the body and understanding how it functions and the reason why we develop certain ailments is a very good way to look after yourself. Skin problems cause a huge amount discomfort as well as emotional stress and can make people sometimes feel unsure especially after trying so many different things that haven't worked. I totally believe If you understand a skin problem then you would understand how to deal with it or find solution to the problem.I have seen a lot of people from newly born to granny who have suffered dry and eczema prone skin
Questions to ask ?
1. Why this happens,
2. When it happens and
3. What particular time you mostly experience the flair ups.
Some triggers that may flare up eczema:
detergents and drying soaps
stress, fragrance, scratchy clothing (ie: wool), dairy products (sometimes nuts), dust mites
Using perfumed skincare products can aggravate the skin due to the harsh chemicals that are not gentle on the skin which often causes allergic reactions.
I believe If you understand a skin problem then you would understand how to deal with it or find solution to the problem.I have seen a lot of people from newly born to grannys who have suffered dry and eczema prone skin
Tips for dealing with Eczema
1. Make sure you add essential fatty acids to your diet like evening primrose oil, borage oil, flax seed, hemp, using supplement will help reduce the inflammatory response inside the body. Taking antioxidants such a betacarotene and vit C and E help boost the immune system.
2. Drinking herbal teas such as chamomile and nettle will help calm and stop itchy and allergic reactions.
3. Having Herbal bath using porridge oats in muslin cloth helps stop itching and especially soothing for babies and children. I suggest adding a few drops of lavender oil and olive oil in the bath to help lock in moisture
4. Apply an emollient cream regularly such as ours, that contain chickweed Safflower oil are soothing and healing and will help stop the itchy feeling. Topically use ointments with marigold. Those with mild eczema often report good result from using our Neroli dry skin cream

Solid Perfume (Making Perfumes)

I have been interested in fragrance and natural perfumery for as long as I can remember. My nose/interest for natural perfumes and essential oils led me to books on the subject, the more I read the more intrigued and fascinated I became. I finally followed my nose,  and this love of natural perfumes led  me to train as an Artisan Natural  Perfumer in 2010- to get a hands on feeling of different  blending techniques. I must add that it takes quite a considerable amount of time and dedication and some getting used to, to understand the vast number of oils and essences in perfumery. Even though I have been working with essential oils and botanicals for as long as I can remember in making my range of skincare products. The art of blending perfumes is extremely  creative, some may see it as a lot of work but I see it as calming, enjoyable and relaxing.

I created a new solid perfume recipe, and  three months on, the scent combination seems to have come into its own with hints of Exotic Egyptian Jasmine, White Champaca  and Osmanthus. This reminds me of the perfume I created when I worked with Alec Lawless of Essentially Me in 2010 -  where I learnt of a different way of blending with calculations to create perfumes. If mathematical calculations is not your thing, honestly, it takes a lot of getting used to.

With the new perfume blend that I've been working on, I wanted to create something that would intrigue and invoke the sensual scenes but at the same time connecting with your inner strength and scense of being. I put it quite simply, a bouquet of flowers with intriguing scents that makes you want more.

I enjoy connecting to nature through a scence of smell and perfume,  including everything aromatic and smelling nice. I would like to convey this in my perfumes, whether solid or liquid but luxurious and personal. My perfumes are still a work in proggress and am loving the exotic blend of oils and infustion of extracts both in the solid solid and liquids. I will share updated information soon, but in the mean time keep an eye on the website to purchase. And this blog for latest  information.

About Solid Perfumes:
Solid perfume have been in existance for thousand of years. Aparently, it was used by the Egyptians to smell nice, you can connect with someone if you smell nice. I like people who smell nice because there is just something about figuring out which scent the perfunme they are wearing is.Solid perfume is deeply rooted in the history of many cultures. The blend of fragrant botanicals with wax and oil creates a unique experience for the wearer. Solid perfumes are easy to carry around in a purse or pocket and are a truly discrete way to wear your perfume as they stay close to your body which makes them ideal for environments where you are in close proximity to others.

African Herbs for Beauty and Well-being

In Africa, herbs have been used for thousands of years to heal, as food, commerce and for health  and well-being. Generally, people all over use herbs to cook and to look after themselves. I will heighlight some herbs that grow in Africa  and can be found in other countries. Africa is blessed with thousands of plants, botanicals and herbs; but for this issue of Ingredient Feature, I will focus on these four ingredients, Neem tree, Shea butter, Palm oil and Black Soap.  On the benefits they have brought and how they have been used for thousands of years for different purposes.

1. Neem tree- (Dogonyaro)
Neem tree is indigenous to India, Burma, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. And is referred by various  names as; Dogon Yaro (Nigeria), Neeb, Margosa (Arabic), Azad Dirakht (Persian). This evergreen shady tree grows luxuriously in the tropical and semi-tropical

In Africa, the Neem tree can be found in the norther part of Nigeria  and know as the Dogonyaro tree. It is very medicinal and highl y regarded for it's antibacterial properties. Traditionally, It is boiled and drank as a cure for malaria. Neem oil is also used to treat all sorts of skin and hair problems from, hair lice and dandruff to infections. However, Neem oil, very smelly and unpleasant, with a very strong strength that over powers any other oil that it is used with and so should be used in moderation.  The Gunky smell can be ovelooked due to the benefits it provides.

2. Palm Kernel oil-Elaeis guineensis

Palm oil is extracted from the pulp of the fruit kernels (seeds) of the oil palm. Palm oil is naturally reddish in color because it contains a high amount of beta-carotene.
Palm oil is edible and used for cooking, the body , frying and in soaps and cosmetics. The benefits of palm oil.
The demand for palm oil is growing and can be found in almost everything you eat from magarine, to butter, cakes, preserves and more. However, you can't talk about palm oil without highlighting the problems. There has been alot of conroversies sourrounding palm oil because of the deforestation, devastation and tragedy that it is causing the Orangotangs and some communities. You can read an article here from the independent about problem palm oil is causing in the western region.

3. Black Soap-oshea Dudu

Black soap also comes from West Africa. It is made from plantain leaves, palm tree leaves, cocoa pods or other leaves. The leaves are burned and then water and oil is added. The oils can be coconut oil, shea butter, palm oil or cocoa butter. The process can take up to 2 weeks and recipes are passed down through generations. This means that different regions and tribes have their own ways of making black soap. Black soap is known as Ose Dudu in Nigeria – ( ‘soap black’).Black soap helps with acne, rashes and hyper-pigmentation. It is not as drying as most soaps and can be used all over the body.
Black soap is medicinal and can be found in Ghana, Nigeria and other aprts of West Africa.
4. Shea Butter-
.
Shea butter known as Karite butter, is a cream coloured fatty substance extracted from the fruit, they grow only in the wild and can take up to 50 years to mature. Alsos known as Mangifolia tree found in the west and central Africa. Western countries are just begining to recognise the benefits of shea butter, something that African have known for thousands of years.

For centuries, Africans have used Shea butter to:
• Moisturize and regenerate skin and hair
• Reduce inflammation, stretch marks and wrinkles
• Treat eczema and arthritis

Shea butter has proven healing properties, dubbed the women’s gold of Africa, it has great healing properties. Heals burns and wounds, promotes cell regeneration, used to treat Eczema, rashes, severe dry chapped skin, provides natural protection against sun damage and ultra violet rays. Good for stretch marks; long application helps delay appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. We use Unrefined shea butter in our Creams and lotions.

What are your experiences with using any of the herbs and plant above? Have you come across them or used them. We use all of these ingredients I have written about and more,  in making our products because of the benefits they provide. Our ingredients are sourced from sustainable resources and suppliers who maintain fairtrade principles. Nature heals, So why change it.

We've Been Growing Our Own Vegetables

Last year I joined my local community growing project to grow our own vegetables. Natural and organic as it comes. And the children loved it. We grew runner beans, some corn, tomatoes, peppers and Courgettes which all came in handy in the cooking pot. And the satisfaction that we grew it our selves was rewarding and priceless, especially for the whole family.

We enjoyed the community scheme and met very friendly , keen family growers and decided to grow more this year. So, we have collected our seeds and this year, we are growing more tomatoes, spinach, some more beans and vegetables. I will keep you informed of how we get on. Here's to a community growing spirit wherever you are . For more information about our community garden project visit  www.outofmyshed.co.uk

This Summer Let Your Skin Breath...

With the weather getting sunnier and hotter, the skin will sweat  more and get clogged up quickly.

Did you know that, pilling on makeup will also get the skin clogged up. And the more you cover up the more the skin is straved of fresh air and then a vicious circle of dependency on covering up occurs- a kind of no you can't be seen without make up on kind of regime.

To keep your skin clean and refreshed, always cleanse and moisturise daily no matter how late it is. Make sure you use a deep cleansing facial scrub once a week and don't go to bed with your make-up on or you will clog up your skin. Lastly and most importantly, wear sun protection if you are out in the sun. Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water when you are out and about. Enjoy the lovely sunshine!

Your Skin is a Reflection of You, it tells a story.

The skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body. As you age some of your skin cells are not able to replace themselves.

Skin diseases will often be an outer reflection of internal problems and must be treated as such. This is because the skin is responsible for the elimination and excreation of a quarter of the body's waste products so any dysfunction of the skin will stress the other 3 the kidney, lungs and bowels.

The fibres that make the skin stretch become less elastic and you begin to lose some connective tissues called collagen. This makes the skin thinner and less able to repair damage. This is usually when you start to notice the lines and wrinkles and looking for miracle creams to work instant miracles.

Sorry to disappoint you, but, our genes affect how the skin ages, and external factors like ultra violet rays from the sun can result in pigment changes, wrinkles and brown spots. Which is why you should protect the skin from environmental pollution and free radicals. By moisturising daily and following a regular skincare regime that includes, cleansing, toning, moisturising, regular treatment and making sure you use sun protection.

The skin is a reflection of all our life's experiences. A healthy lifestyle is usually reflected in a healthy looking skin. If you understand the skin structure then you will by now know that the skin absorbs absolutely almost 70% of what you put on it and should be looked after properly.

New Year, New You or Old You, With Changes

Welcome to 2011.We've all been there, another new year and very exciting prospects in mind. You promise to be good and suddenly notice all the rates for gym membership and thinking which new exercise gear to buy, running shoes or gym membership with a personal trainer. Dieting, Dvding or wandering around the gym with programme cards. They are simply known as the January Joiners and  as we all know it all wears out  by the spring. Well, how about doing something different this year. So, I thought I should highlight a few simple changes that you can make that will be of benefit to you in the long term if you keep at it diligently.

Think of long term strategies for your health and well being

1. Ditch the Diets
Be true to your self. Ditch the detox diets because your body eliminates it self anyway, ditch the diet books and re- programme you mind in a positive way. Use 2011 to strengthen your will power so that you can get through any mental barriers that make you give up your new year resolution before the year ends.

Have you ever thought why people pledge to lose weight or start a new life in the new year. Surely, the weight gain is not a compilation of food they have eaten in the two weeks of the Christmas holiday. The weight gain is simply as a result of changes you did not make in the whole year and then pledge to loose it all in the new year. Although, I am aware that we all over indulge during the festive season with extra helpings of irresistible food. Even research says, women especially gain up to half a stone during the festive season.

Remember, Rome was not built in a day and the only way you can achieve your aim is by laying one brick at a time with examples like, making small changes daily, cutting out your potion size and keeping active. Think of long lasting management tips for health and well being.

2. Get Active
If you walk for 30-45 mins at least 3 time a week,  you will notice a difference long term. Keep your body hydrated by drinking more water and your skin will look plummer. I don't believe drastic decisions help achieve aims I simply  believe a good mindset and will of mind with carefully  planned achievable and doable goals can be achieved for longer.  Remember if you don't put in the hard work, you will not see any difference. Nobody lost weight by sitting in front of the telly eating pop corn. So go out there and do something. slow and steady one step at a time.

3. Have a Smoothie

Having a smoothie for breakfast or lunch will help you get your five a day. You cant comprehend the benefits of the nutritional benefits  and vitamins you get from the fruits. this is one of the best weight management tips you can incorporate into  to your new year resolution. Making smoothies is easily done all you have to do is buy an affordable smoothie maker and  some fruits  and experiment with healthy drinks.

4. Great Skincare Regime
If you are still deciding what your new years resolution is, make sure great skincare regime is one of them. The skin absorbs up to 70 % of what you put on so make sure to choose a natural organic alternative beauty product. Natural is always best as the ingredient will work as skin food to repair and look after your skin naturally without any harsh chemicals.

Products: WuChi by Maks Mini Face Kit

What's your New Year resolution  ?
I stopped making new year resolutions but only continue from where I have stopped with a positive mindset in everything that we do here at WuChi HQ. Although, I would like to add that I intend to write more and connect with my customers as much as possible because behind every brand there is someone and people (team working hard ) to make sure everyone is happy. Here is to a very successful healthy and very happy New Year to you .

WuChi by Maks- on BBC News 24

We were recently contacted by producers of a new BBC news 24 programme called 'Show me the Money'. I was asked to show and demonstrate my expertise in making natural skincare products. And then interviewed about how WuChi by Maks was started, the benefits of  running a business, being an entrepreneur and the challenges of running and growing a company from scratch.

It is one thing when you are working by your self and very different when you have journalist and the camera watching.

Part two was then filmed at the BIPC with other female entrepreneurs to discuss the benefit we derive from a women's networking group. It focused on how we help and empower each other at different stages of  our businesses and the benefits networking with other entrepreneurs brings. The whole experience was fantastic.

Having now watched the BBC feature which was shown yesterday the 31st October, it went really well. It was a wonderful experience it projected what we do and how hard we work at WuChi HQ making our lovely luxurious skincare products.  I  had fun filming the segment  and a lot of work went into the preparation. I feel privileged and blessed to be part of the experience. Thank you to the team.

Making Soaps for Christmas

The thought of making natural soap really does excite me. I love to look at them when they are unmoulded and laid out to cure. What a beautıful sight.  They look very beautiful and glorıous to behold.
There is joy at WuChi HQ when our newly made batch of soaps fınally come into there own, this is the usual 4-6 weeks when the soap are fully saponifıed and you can smell the gorgeous aroma of the scent.
Here at WuChi by Maks, all our soaps are handmade using the traditional cold process method where the naturally produced glycerine is retained to moisturise the skin, resulting in a long lasting creamy bar that lathers.I really do enjoy this process and wıll be sharıng the latest pictures of our newly made soaps.

Let's talk about Hair ..

I was thinking about a beauty topic to write about today , and I happened to glance myself walking past a mirror and thought wow!  how great my hair looks...  and thought why not talk about hair. Which is a womans great past time.

But it wasn't always like this.. I had my days of short, long, weave, natural, braids, dropping , pulling complaining and now very pleased, calm and happiest.
And I thought! yeah, lets talk about hair.

Hair, loss or hair problem can sometime be as a result of hormonal, environmental or changes going on in your body. And sometime hair loss can even be as a result of stress.
